Hey race fans, welcome back to Driving on Marbles! It’s Saturday morning and tomorrow night is genuinely one of the biggest races of the entire 2026 season.
The Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway opens the 10-race Chase and everything we’ve been building toward all year comes down to these final 10 races. The championship will be decided over the next two months and it starts tomorrow at the Lady in Black.
Let’s get into this week’s blog post.
What Happened at Daytona last Saturday Night Under the Lights!
Before we get into the card, let’s talk about the biggest story from Daytona last Saturday night. Ryan Preece won the Coke Zero Sugar 400 by just 0.024 seconds on the final lap for his first career Cup Series victory, punching his ticket into the 16-driver Chase field in the most dramatic way possible. He battled back from fender damage caused by a three-car wreck in Stage 1 and held on at the line in one of the closest finishes in Daytona history. What a way to close out the regular season.
The points have been reset for the Chase. Here’s how the 16-driver field looks heading into Darlington:

Hamlin leads the Chase with 2100 points, a 25-point cushion over second-place Blaney. Our main driver Reddick is seeded third with 2065. Here’s the most important thing to understand about this year’s Chase: unlike the elimination system NASCAR used from 2014 through 2025, there are no three-race rounds and no winner-take-all championship finale. Every single point earned at every Chase race carries forward to the end. The driver with the most points after the final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 8 wins the championship. That makes the Southern 500 genuinely important because there’s no reset coming. Points lost at Darlington are points lost forever.
The Cook Out Southern 500
The Cook Out Southern 500 is one of NASCAR’s four crown jewels and there may not be a more appropriate place to begin a championship run. Darlington Raceway is a 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval with 25 degrees of banking in Turns 1 and 2, 23 degrees in Turns 3 and 4, and a narrow preferred groove that migrates right up to the wall as the race goes on. The track’s abrasive surface eats tires like nothing else on the schedule and the unique egg shape means the two ends of the track drive completely differently. The Southern 500 runs 367 laps for 501.322 miles across three stages. It is the longest race on the Chase schedule.
One important rules change for 2026: Darlington is one of five ovals that moved to the 750-horsepower short-track package this season alongside Bristol, Dover, Nashville, and Gateway. More power and a smaller rear spoiler put the lap back in the driver’s hands which should make the racing even more driver-dependent than in recent seasons.
Qualifying is this afternoon on USA Network. Watch closely because where our picks start matters enormously at a track where the groove is narrow and passing opportunities are limited.

My Main Pick: Tyler Reddick (3rd seed, 2065 pts, 5 wins)
Reddick won at Darlington earlier this season in the spring race and it wasn’t close. He unloaded as the fastest car in practice and qualifying and then backed it up with a statement win despite numerous issues during the race. Darlington is genuinely his best oval.
Reddick leads all active Cup Series drivers in average start, poles, top fives, top tens, and average finish at Darlington Raceway in the Next Gen era. Read that sentence again. He leads every single meaningful statistical category at this track in the current car. His ability to ride the wall as cleanly as anyone in the field, perhaps the best in the entire series, is perfectly suited to Darlington’s narrow groove and abrasive surface.
The market has him as the co-favorite at +500 on FanDuel and DraftKings and the price is completely justified by his Darlington dominance. Having our main driver at his best oval for the opening Chase race is about the best possible start to the championship stretch we could ask for. He’s our guy.
Inside Top 12 Pick No. 1: Denny Hamlin (1st seed, 2100 pts, 4 wins)
Hamlin is a five-time Darlington winner which is the most of any active Cup driver at this track. He enters the Chase as the regular season champion and the number one seed with a 25-point cushion over Blaney. The JGR setup at Darlington has been one of the best in the garage for over a decade and Hamlin’s ability to manage tires and navigate the wall on long green-flag runs is one of his greatest strengths.
The market has him at +400 on TheSpread and +500 on FanDuel as the race favorite. Five Darlington wins. Regular season champion. Number one seed. 25-point cushion. At a track where tire management and veteran racecraft define the outcome over 501 miles, there genuinely isn’t a better driver to anchor the inside of the card. He’s the anchor.
Inside Top 12 Pick No. 2: Chase Briscoe (5th seed, 2055 pts, 1 win)
Briscoe is the defending Southern 500 winner. He’s listed as the DraftKings co-favorite alongside Reddick at +500 which tells you the oddsmakers believe his Darlington credentials are just as strong as the spring race winner’s. JGR’s Darlington setup data benefits Briscoe directly alongside Bell and Hamlin.
We’ve talked all season about Briscoe being one of the best outside-top-12 picks in the field and now he’s inside the top 12 as the fifth seed in the Chase. Having both JGR Toyotas (Hamlin and Briscoe) as our inside picks at a track where JGR has been historically dominant gives us maximum coverage of the strongest Darlington organization in the garage. He’s on the card.
Outside Top 12 Pick No. 1: Bubba Wallace (14th seed, 2010 pts)
Wallace is the 23XI Racing teammate to our main driver Reddick who won at Darlington in the spring. That means Wallace benefits directly from the setup data and tire knowledge that produced a race win at this exact track five months ago. At Darlington where setup knowledge and tire management over 501 miles are everything, having access to a race-winning setup is a genuine competitive advantage.
He’s the 14th seed in the Chase at 2010 points which means every single point matters from this moment forward. At +2500 from outside the top 12 for a driver in Darlington-winning equipment with genuine championship urgency, the value is right.
Outside Top 12 Pick No. 2: Erik Jones (non-Chase, +3500)
Erik Jones won the 2022 Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway driving the No. 43 for what was then Petty GMS Motorsports. He knows how to win at the Lady in Black. He’s still driving the No. 43, now for Legacy Motor Club, and the institutional knowledge of a Darlington victory lives with this driver and this team.
Predictem specifically highlights Jones as one of their three headline picks for the Southern 500 this week alongside Hamlin and Buescher. He’s not in the Chase field which means there’s no championship pressure on the No. 43 and he can race freely for the outright win without strategic calculations. At +3500 for a former Southern 500 winner backed by expert analysis, the value is genuinely compelling.
Outside Top 12 Pick No. 3: William Byron (13th seed, 2015 pts)
Byron is the 13th seed in the Chase at 2015 points and needs a strong opening result to climb the standings before the gap to the top becomes too large to close. Hendrick Motorsports has been consistently strong at Darlington and Byron’s qualifying pace at abrasive tracks has been one of his genuine strengths throughout the 2026 season.
At a track where every point carries forward with no resets coming, the urgency for the lower-seeded Chase drivers is genuinely real. Byron needs to treat this race like it matters because it does. A strong Darlington result would immediately close the gap to the top half of the Chase standings. At +1600 the price reflects his 13th seed position rather than his Hendrick Motorsports equipment level.
Dark Horses Worth Watching
Ryan Blaney (+850) — The second seed with 2075 points and three wins in 2026. RotoWire’s best bet for the race winner this week. Inside the top 12 at 2nd. Has been the hottest driver in NASCAR over the past month with the NHMS win and Daytona top-five result. If you want to swap him in for one of our inside picks the credentials absolutely support it.
Kyle Larson (+850) — Seventh seed with 2045 points. Inside the top 12. Same odds as Blaney and genuinely strong at abrasive tracks where driver skill separates the field. Still searching for his first 2026 win and the Chase opener could be where it finally happens.
Ty Gibbs (+1000) — Fourth seed with 2060 points. Inside the top 12. RotoWire specifically recommends him for a top-five finish at +210. Two wins this season and JGR’s Darlington data benefits him directly.
Daniel Suarez (+6500) — Eleventh seed. RotoWire specifically recommends him for a top-ten finish at +340 noting his seventh-place result in the spring was his best in 17 Darlington starts and came in his first race there with Spire Motorsports. Teammate Carson Hocevar finished ninth and fourth in the last two Darlington races providing evidence that Spire has figured out this track.
Drivers I'm Steering Clear Of
Christopher Bell — Sixth seed with 2050 points but Darlington has not been one of his strongest tracks historically. Seven runner-up finishes on the season tell you he’s consistently fast but consistently unable to close and Darlington’s abrasive surface and narrow groove reward a very specific skill set that hasn’t produced Bell’s best results.
Ryan Preece — Won at Daytona with an incredible last-lap pass for his first career Cup victory but has never finished in the top ten at Darlington Raceway. The Daytona momentum is real but Darlington is a completely different challenge and his track-specific record here is a genuine concern at the 16th seed.
Carson Hocevar — Has finished ninth and fourth in the last two Darlington races per RotoWire which is genuinely strong recent form. But he’s the 12th seed right on the edge of the top 12 and the aggressive style that works at some tracks can be punished by Darlington’s unforgiving wall. Worth monitoring in practice but not quite on the card this week.
