Hey race fans, welcome back to Driving on Marbles!
It’s Friday morning and we’ve arrived at the final race of the 2026 regular season. The Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night is about to set the 16-driver Chase field and if you’ve been following this sport for any amount of time you know exactly what Daytona under the lights delivers. Pack racing. Multi-car wrecks. Finishes that nobody sees coming. And championship dreams either made or shattered in a single moment at 190 mph.
The season started at Daytona with the 500 back in February when our main driver Tyler Reddick took the checkered flag. It ends at Daytona on Saturday night with the Coke Zero Sugar 400 under the lights. Everything in between has been building to this moment.
Let’s get into this week’s blog post.
What Happened at New Hampshire last Sunday
Before we get into the card, let’s recap New Hampshire last Sunday.
Ryan Blaney won the Dollar Tree 301 for his third victory of the season leading 115 laps in a dominant performance. That gives Blaney two wins in his last six races and he arrives at Daytona as the hottest driver in NASCAR. Our main driver Reddick gained 29 points to move to 860 in the standings which is a solid result heading into the finale. Bell gained 43 points suggesting another strong top-five result at the Magic Mile where he has two Cup victories.
A Ford has won the Coke Zero Sugar 400 three consecutive summers: Blaney in 2025, Harrison Burton in 2024, and Chris Buescher in 2023. That three-year Ford dominance at the summer Daytona race is a significant factor in how we’ve built this week’s card.
The Wild Card: NASCAR's New Aero Package
Here’s what makes this weekend genuinely unlike any Daytona race we’ve ever seen. NASCAR will debut a brand new aerodynamic package at the World Center of Racing, cutting the rear spoilers from 7 inches to 4 to reduce drag and adjusting horsepower from 510 to 465 to account for the reduced downforce. Officials expect single-file runs to be roughly 3 mph faster with the new setup.
And here’s the part that makes it even more unpredictable: there is no practice session scheduled for the Cup Series this weekend. Qualifying is this afternoon and then teams show up Saturday night having had minimal time to dial in the new aero configuration at Daytona. Nobody knows how the cars will draft. Nobody knows how the handling will feel in the pack. Nobody knows what the reduced downforce will do to the Big One dynamics that define Daytona racing.
That means Saturday night could be unlike any Daytona race we’ve ever witnessed. Experience, instinct, and the ability to adapt on the fly become everything when there’s no data to lean on. Watch qualifying closely this afternoon because the grid positions are going to matter.
The Chase Cutline
Fourteen drivers have clinched their Chase spots heading into Daytona. Two spots on the 16-driver Chase grid remain up for grabs. Here’s where the bubble stands heading into the finale:
Austin Cindric sits 44 points above the line. Shane van Gisbergen holds the last spot by 31 points. Ryan Preece sits 31 points back and Brad Keselowski is 66 points behind.
Any eligible winner automatically claims a Chase berth which means several bubble teams will race for the outright victory rather than managing points. That desperation in a pack of 40 cars drafting at 190 mph under the Daytona lights is what makes this race one of the most intense events of the entire season.
The Coke Zero Sugar 400 runs 160 laps across 400 miles with Stage 1 ending at Lap 35, Stage 2 at Lap 95, and the final stage covering the remaining 65 laps. Green flag drops at 7:30 PM ET on NBC. Let’s get into the card.
My Main Pick: Tyler Reddick (4th in points, 860 pts, 5 wins)
Reddick won the 2026 Daytona 500 back in February. He is a proven winner at this exact track on this exact 2.5-mile superspeedway layout. That’s the single most important piece of data on the card this week because at Daytona the team that has won here most recently tends to understand the drafting dynamics and pit strategy demands better than anyone else in the field.
He’s already clinched his Chase spot which means the 23XI Racing team can race aggressively for the outright win without worrying about championship points. At a superspeedway where the new aero package introduces genuine unknowns, having a team that won the last race at this track is a real advantage. The Toyota push partner alliance gives him strong draft partners throughout the field for the closing laps when positioning becomes everything. He’s our guy and Daytona is one of his best tracks.
Inside Top 12 Pick No. 1: Ryan Blaney (2nd in points, 924 pts, 3 wins)
Blaney won this exact race last August in a race that featured 44 lead changes among 19 different drivers with Daniel Suarez finishing second and Justin Haley third. He has three wins in 2026 including two in his last six races and he arrives at Daytona as the hottest driver in NASCAR right now.
A Ford has won the Coke Zero Sugar 400 three consecutive summers and that isn’t a coincidence. The Ford superspeedway package has been specifically dialed in for this event and Blaney’s Team Penske operation sits at the center of that development effort. He has two wins in his last 10 Daytona starts and the Team Penske Ford draft alliance with Logano and Cindric gives him the strongest three-car push partner network of any driver in the field. He’s the anchor.
Inside Top 12 Pick No. 2: Joey Logano (9th in points, 682 pts, 2 wins)
Logano is the FanDuel co-favorite at +1000 alongside Blaney and the case for him at Daytona is genuinely compelling. He won the 2015 Daytona 500 and is a three-time Cup Series champion (2018, 2022, 2024) with 39 career Cup victories. His veteran superspeedway instincts are among the best in the entire garage and he knows how to position himself in the draft when the race comes down to the final laps.
The Team Penske Ford draft alliance with Blaney and Cindric gives him strong push partners and the three-car Penske train in the closing laps could be the most formidable force on the track Saturday night. He won at North Wilkesboro and Richmond earlier this summer and has been one of the strongest drivers in the field over the second half of the season. Having both Penske Fords as our inside picks at a track where Ford has won three straight summers maximizes our exposure to what has been the dominant superspeedway manufacturer.
Outside Top 12 Pick No. 1: Bubba Wallace (14th in points, 630 pts)
Wallace is the 23XI Racing teammate to our main driver Reddick and at Daytona the Toyota push partner alliance is a genuine competitive advantage. Reddick won the Daytona 500 in February and Wallace benefits directly from the same drafting strategy and team knowledge that put the No. 45 in Victory Lane.
He won the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis last summer showing he can deliver at the biggest venues on the calendar. At +2200 from outside the top 12 for a driver in Daytona 500-winning equipment with strong draft partner support, the value is right.
Outside Top 12 Pick No. 2: Austin Cindric (15th in points, 599 pts)
Cindric won the 2022 Daytona 500 as a rookie in one of the most dramatic finishes in the race’s history. He has genuine Daytona winning experience at the highest level and the Penske Ford draft alliance with both Blaney and Logano gives him two strong push partners for the closing laps.
He sits 44 points above the Chase cutline which means he needs a solid result to protect his position heading into the Chase. The combination of Daytona 500 winning experience, a Penske Ford from the manufacturer that has won three straight summer Daytona races, and genuine Chase urgency makes him one of the most compelling outside picks on the board. At +1400 the value is strong.
Outside Top 12 Pick No. 3: Zane Smith (24th in points, 442 pts)
Zane Smith finished sixth at the Daytona 500 in February, seventh at the spring Atlanta race, and fifth at Talladega earlier this season. Those are three consistently strong results at superspeedway-style tracks in 2026 and very few drivers outside the top 12 can match that kind of drafting-track consistency.
He drives a Ford for Front Row Motorsports which means he benefits from the same Ford draft alliance that has produced the summer Daytona winner three consecutive years. At +6000 for a driver who finished sixth at this exact track seven months ago and has been consistently strong at every superspeedway-style event in 2026, the price is genuinely generous. He’s the value dart of the week.
Dark Horses Worth Watching
William Byron (+1000) — The DraftKings favorite this week per FOX Sports. Won the 2020 Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona. Inside the top 12 at 12th. Hendrick Motorsports has genuine superspeedway pedigree and his recent form has been strong heading into the finale.
Alex Bowman (+2700) — The SportsLine model is specifically high on Bowman this week, noting his 17.1 average finish at Daytona is the third-best among all active drivers. Outside the top 12. At +2700 the model’s endorsement and the Daytona-specific average finish make him worth a look.
Chris Buescher (+2200) — Won the 2023 Coke Zero Sugar 400. Inside the top 12 at 10th. Yahoo Sports specifically identifies him as their headline sleeper pick this week. A Ford driver who contributed to the three-year Ford summer Daytona streak.
Daniel Suarez (+2800) — Outside the top 12 at 13th. Finished second in this race last year behind Blaney. A runner-up finish twelve months ago at this exact event in similar conditions is worth noting at that price.
Drivers I'm Steering Clear Of
Denny Hamlin — The championship leader but superspeedway-style tracks have been his weakest track type in the Next Gen era with just five top tens in 27 starts. The massive points lead means he’ll likely race conservatively and avoid the chaos rather than going for the win which limits his upside for pool purposes.
Chase Elliott — The SportsLine model is specifically fading Elliott this week, saying he finishes outside the top ten despite being one of the shorter-priced drivers on the board. The model’s hesitation is a genuine flag.
Carson Hocevar — Superspeedway racing at Daytona is the ultimate chaos equalizer but Spire Motorsports’ Daytona track record hasn’t been consistently strong and the new aero package adds even more uncertainty for smaller organizations with less engineering depth.
Shane Van Gisbergen — Holds the last Chase spot by just 31 points and will likely race conservatively to protect his position rather than going for the win. That conservative approach limits his upside for pool purposes even though his talent is undeniable.

Wrapping Up This Week's Picks Post For The Coca-Cola 600 at Daytona International Speedway
The theme is clear: lean into the Ford superspeedway alliance that has produced the summer Daytona winner three consecutive years while keeping our Toyota base covered through Reddick and Wallace.
Reddick as our main driver at the track where he won the Daytona 500 six months ago. Blaney as the defending winner with two wins in his last six races and the hottest form in NASCAR. Logano as the 2015 Daytona 500 winner, three-time Cup champion, and FanDuel co-favorite riding strong second-half momentum. Wallace as the 23XI teammate play with Brickyard-winning pedigree. Cindric as the 2022 Daytona 500 winner with Penske Ford alliance support and genuine Chase urgency. And Zane Smith as the value play who finished sixth at this track in February and has been consistently strong at superspeedway events all season at +6000.
The new aero package, no practice session, Chase bubble desperation, and Daytona’s natural chaos factor all combine to make this one of the most genuinely unpredictable races of the entire 2026 season. Qualifying is this afternoon so keep an eye on where our picks end up on the grid because positioning matters enormously at a track where the draft decides everything.
Green flag drops tomorrow at 7:30 PM ET on NBC under the Daytona lights. The Chase field will be set by the time the checkered flag waves. I’ll be back after the race with the full recap and a breakdown of how the card held up at one of the most legendary tracks in motorsport.
See you then everyone. Let’s close out the regular season with a bang!
