Kurt Busch With Last Lap Pass,
Wins 59th Running Of The Daytona 500
Well the 59th running of the Daytona 500 is in the record books with Kurt Busch making a last minute run for the checker in the final laps.
Busch said in a post race interview that he had actually lost his rear view mirror with 30 laps to go stating…
“I couldn’t even see out the back. And I thought that was an omen. Throw caution to the wind.”
I guess he didn’t really need it…with the help of his spotter Tony Raines, along with the rest of the Stewart-Haas team, he managed to push hard late in the race finishing .228 seconds ahead of Ryan Blaney, to win the 59th Daytona 500.
This was the first race featuring NASCAR’s new 3 stage race format with Kyle Busch winning the first stage. He would however, wreck on lap 105 taking with him fellow Toyota team mates Erik Jones and Matt Kenseth.
He also took out returning driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had missed the last half of last year while recovering from a pretty serious concussion.
Winning the second stage was Kevin Harvick, who would also later get into a wreck. The wreck Harvick was involved in took place on lap 128 when Jimmie Johnson spins out and wreaks havoc on 17 other drivers including Harvick.
Harvick, unlike Busch however, would go on to finish the race 3 laps down.
