FireKeepers Casino 400 Recap: Hamlin Ties Kyle Busch With an Emotional Victory at Michigan

63 career wins. A tribute flag on the victory lap. And a dominant 11-second margin that left no doubt about who owned Michigan on Sunday.

FireKeepers Casino 400 Recap: Hamlin Ties Kyle Busch With an Emotional Victory at Michigan

Hey race fans, welcome back to Driving on Marbles! What a Sunday afternoon at Michigan International Speedway. A record-setting number of crashes, a violent wreck that brought out the red flag, and through all of it Denny Hamlin drove from the rear of the field to win the FireKeepers Casino 400 by over eleven seconds.

Lets get into how it all went down.

Hamlin claimed his 63rd career NASCAR Cup Series victory on Sunday

…tying the late Kyle Busch for ninth on the all-time wins list. After the race, Hamlin honored Busch by carrying a special flag on his victory lap around Michigan International Speedway.

Three weeks after losing one of the greatest champions the sport has ever known, that gesture resonated with every single person watching.

It was one of the most emotional victory laps we’ve seen all season.

The Race

Hamlin won the pole position for the FireKeepers Casino 400 with a speed of 195.117 mph, his 51st career pole and second at Michigan International Speedway.

However he had to start from the rear of the 37-car field after suffering damage to the underside of his car when a tire went down in practice. For the second consecutive race Hamlin began at the back of the pack. At Nashville it was a jumped start penalty. At Michigan it was practice damage. Both times he drove straight to Victory Lane.

Carson Hocevar qualified second for his home state race, with Tyler Reddick third, Ty Gibbs fourth, Chase Briscoe fifth, Chase Elliott sixth, Kyle Larson seventh, and Christopher Bell eighth.

Chase Elliott won Stage 1 with Erik Jones second, Daniel Suarez third, Kyle Larson fourth, and William Byron fifth. Christopher Bell finished sixth in Stage 1 collecting solid stage points.

Tyler Reddick won Stage 2 with Ty Gibbs second. Reddick was dominant in the middle portion of the race before his afternoon took a dramatic turn.

Then came the crashes that defined the afternoon. Sunday’s race delivered a record-setting number of incidents at Michigan International Speedway making it a genuine survival test for every team in the field.

Reddick finished 35th after going out on Lap 83, ending what had been a dominant run through the first two stages. The championship leader’s day ended well before the halfway point.

The biggest incident came on Lap 148 when Chase Elliott got loose at the bottom of Turn 3 and made contact with Christopher Bell who was racing just above him. Both drivers lost control and hit the outer wall extremely hard, leaving a dent in the barrier and raising the red flag so NASCAR could repair the damaged safety barrier. Both Bell and Elliott were done for the day. Bell finished 31st and Elliott finished 32nd.

Through all of that chaos Hamlin worked his way from the rear of the field to the front and once he got there he was simply untouchable. The margin of victory tells the whole story. Over eleven seconds. Nobody else was close.

The Storylines Worth Talking About

Hamlin’s 63rd career victory ties him with the late Kyle Busch for ninth on the all-time Cup Series wins list. The timing of that milestone, coming three weeks after Busch’s passing, made it one of the most emotionally significant wins of Hamlin’s entire career. He carried a special flag honoring Busch during his victory lap around Michigan and the emotion in the garage was visible from everyone who saw it. This is now back-to-back wins for Hamlin (Nashville and Michigan) and three wins on the 2026 season not counting the All-Star Race. The man is on an incredible run of form right now.

Bell and Elliott's violent crash on Lap 148

On Lap 148, Elliott got loose at the bottom of Turn 3 and was close enough to Bell that both drivers lost control and hit the outer wall extremely hard. The impact was severe enough to dent the barrier and bring out the red flag for repairs. Both drivers walked away which is the most important thing. Bell finished 31st and Elliott finished 32nd. For our pool card it’s a genuinely painful result after Bell had finished sixth in Stage 1 and was running strongly through the middle of the race.

Erik Jones' outstanding second place

Jones started tenth and finished second, over eleven seconds behind Hamlin but well clear of everyone else. That is a genuinely outstanding result for Legacy Motor Club and one of the surprise performances of the afternoon. He was competitive throughout the race and earned every bit of that runner-up finish.

Carson Hocevar's home state top five

The Portage, Michigan native qualified second for his home state race and finished fifth. Running inside the top five at your home track in front of friends and family is a special moment and Hocevar delivered exactly the kind of performance that the Michigan crowd was hoping to see from him.

Reddick's championship lead survives despite a DNF

Reddick finished 35th after going out on Lap 83 but his championship lead is large enough that a single DNF doesn’t change the overall picture dramatically. He still leads by a comfortable margin heading into Pocono next week.

How Our Picks Did

Bell finished 31st after being collected in the violent Lap 148 crash with Chase Elliott. He was running strongly through the race and had finished sixth in Stage 1 collecting solid stage points. Everything was on track for a good Michigan result before Elliott got loose in Turn 3 and the two cars made contact. The crash was severe enough to bring out the red flag for barrier repairs. There was absolutely nothing Bell could do about it. The pick was right, the car was fast, and a racing incident ended his day. We move on.

Denny Hamlin (Inside Top 12) — Won the Race

Our inside pick won the race for the second straight week. From the rear of the field to a dominant 11-second victory. Tied Kyle Busch for 63 career wins and ninth on the all-time list. That is about as good as it gets from an inside top 12 pick in any pool format. Hamlin has now won back-to-back races at Nashville and Michigan and is genuinely on the best run of form of his entire 2026 season. Outstanding.

Tyler Reddick (Inside Top 12) — DNF

Reddick won Stage 2 collecting valuable stage points but finished 35th after going out on Lap 83. The stage points from Stage 2 give this pick some value despite the early exit but the DNF hurts the total points return significantly. Michigan was a tough day for the championship leader but the car was genuinely fast when it was running.

Chase Briscoe (Outside Top 12) — Hit

Tenth place from a fifth-place start. Not the top-five result the qualifying position suggested was possible but a clean top-ten finish on a day where the attrition rate was brutal. Briscoe kept the car out of trouble and brought it home when many higher-profile names didn’t finish. A solid outside pick result that keeps adding to his consistent 2026 season.

Joey Logano (Outside Top 12) — Hit

Seventh place from an 18th-place start. Now that is a strong Michigan result. Logano started in the middle of the pack and worked his way forward all afternoon, finishing seventh on a day where three-time Michigan winners and championship contenders were falling out of the race all around him.

Bubba Wallace (Outside Top 12) — Massive Hit

Third place. This is the pick of the week by a significant margin. Wallace started 13th and drove to a podium finish in the 23XI Racing Toyota, finishing 12 seconds behind his dominant teammate Hamlin but well clear of everyone else behind him except Erik Jones. Wallace finished third while Larson and Hocevar rounded out the top five. At +1800 for a third-place finish this is one of our best outside pick results of the entire season. The 23XI Racing Toyota advantage at Michigan that we talked about all week showed up exactly as predicted.

The big picture this week

Hamlin won the race for the second week in a row. Wallace finished third. Logano finished seventh. Briscoe finished tenth. Four of our six picks finished in the top ten and the race winner was our inside anchor. The two misses were Bell’s violent crash with Elliott on Lap 148 and Reddick’s early DNF, both of which were completely outside our control. On a day where Michigan produced a record-setting number of crashes, having four picks survive and deliver genuine pool points is a really strong outcome. Hamlin winning back-to-back gives us enormous momentum heading into Pocono next week.

Next Up: Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Pocono Raceway next Sunday June 14 for the Great American Getaway 400 at 3:00 PM ET on Amazon Prime Video.

Pocono is a 2.5-mile triangular oval with three completely different turns which makes it one of the most unique tracks on the entire schedule.

My full Top 20 rundown will be out midweek and the picks post will be live before qualifying on Saturday.

Make sure to check back then everyone. What a Sunday at Michigan!
