The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series rule changes and team moves that matter

Hey race fans,

Bryan here, welcoming you back to another fantasy Nascar  season on DrivingOnMarbles.com!

The NASCAR Cup Series is officially kicking off another wild season next weekend and if you thought 2025 was exciting, buckle up, 2026 comes with some serious changes that could shake up everything from how points get scored to who’s sitting in your favorite ride.

Whether you’re buzzing about Daytona, scratching your head at new qualifying rules, or just here to see who switched teams, I’ve got you covered.

Let’s dive in.

The Championship Format Shake-Up

The Chase is Back

The biggest headline? NASCAR has officially brought back a Chase-style championship format starting this season. The elimination playoff system is gone. Instead, the championship will be decided through a points reset followed by a 10-race Chase, where overall consistency across that stretch determines the champion.

That means no more “winner-take-all” finale drama — it’s back to drivers having to perform across multiple races to seal the deal.

Wins Now Mean Even More

Race wins now award 55 points, up from the previous 40. That’s a massive bump and puts even more emphasis on getting to Victory Lane instead of settling for safe points days. Expect teams to be more aggressive when they’re in position to win.

Competition Rule Changes Fans Will Notice

Horsepower Increase at Short Tracks & Road Courses

NASCAR is boosting engine output to around 750 horsepower at short tracks and road courses. This is aimed squarely at improving passing and throttle response in places where drivers really hustle the car. More power + tighter tracks = more action.

No More Airflow Tricks in Qualifying

NASCAR has clarified that drivers can’t manipulate airflow during qualifying laps (like sticking a hand out the window). It’s now clearly banned in the rulebook to keep qualifying runs clean and consistent across the field.

Fastest Lap Eligibility Update

If a car goes behind the wall to the garage for major repairs, it can’t return later just to chase the fastest lap bonus. Only laps set before that garage visit count. This prevents damaged cars from coming back out strictly for bonus points.

OEM Provisional Starting Spots

For the first few races of the season, NASCAR can allow up to four additional starting positions for brand-new manufacturer-backed teams that might not otherwise qualify on speed. It’s a move to help new manufacturer programs get on track and build momentum early.

Confirmed Team and Driver Changes Worth Talking About for 2026

Trackhouse Racing Shuffle
Connor Zilisch will be taking over the No. 88 ride at Trackhouse, replacing Daniel Suárez, who is headed to Spire Motorsports in the No. 7 car. Justin Haley won’t be returning to Spire this season.

Rick Ware Racing Switches to Chevy
Rick Ware Racing is shaking things up in 2026 by leaving Ford and hopping over to Chevrolet, complete with a new technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing. That’s a fresh start for Cody Ware and the No. 51 squad, and it could be the change that finally gets them into more consistent Top-20 runs.

New Faces on the No. 48 Team
Hendrick Motorsports No. 48 team may not have swapped drivers, but the crew around Alex Bowman is almost all new for 2026 as they look to turn results around after a rough run last year.

Rookie Watch – Connor Zilisch
Zilisch enters 2026 Cup action as one of the names to watch for Rookie of the Year honors. There weren’t a ton of fresh faces coming in, but Zilisch’s move to Cup with Trackhouse definitely puts him in the spotlight.

What This All Means

2026 feels like a return to fundamentals mixed with some modern twists. NASCAR is clearly trying to reward consistency, wheel-to-wheel fun, and raw speed, while still keeping an eye on fair competition and fresh talent.

The comeback of the Chase format means you can’t just steal a last-race win and call it a season, you’ve got to earn your stripes week in and week out. And with more horsepower at short tracks and road courses, I’m expecting closer racing and more shakeups in the leaderboards than we’ve seen in a while.
