Chase Briscoe’s Daytona 500 Penalty: What Went Wrong & How It Impacts NASCAR 2025

Chase Briscoe Penalty Daytona

In a significant development following the 2025 Daytona 500, NASCAR has levied substantial penalties against Chase Briscoe and the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) team due to unauthorized modifications to the vehicle’s spoiler.

This infraction has not only impacted the team’s standings but also raised questions about compliance and oversight in the sport.

The Infraction

After securing the pole position and finishing fourth in the Daytona 500, Briscoe’s car underwent a standard post-race inspection at NASCAR’s Research & Development Center in Concord, North Carolina.

During this process, officials discovered that the base of the spoiler—a single-source supplied part—had been modified.

NASCAR’s regulations strictly prohibit any alterations to such parts to ensure a level playing field among all competitors.

The specific modification involved adjustments to the spoiler base, which could potentially offer aerodynamic advantages by reducing drag and increasing top speed.

The Penalties

In response to the violation, NASCAR imposed the following sanctions:

  • Driver and Team Points Deduction: Both Briscoe and JGR were docked 100 driver and owner points, respectively. Additionally, they each lost 10 playoff points. This severe penalty has plunged Briscoe to the bottom of the driver standings, leaving him with a deficit of 67 points.

  • Financial Penalty: JGR has been fined $100,000, reflecting the seriousness with which NASCAR views such infractions.

  • Crew Chief Suspension: James Small, the crew chief for the No. 19 team, has been suspended for four races. His absence will undoubtedly pose challenges for the team’s performance and strategy in the upcoming events.

JGR's Response

Joe Gibbs Racing has announced its intention to appeal the penalties.

In an official statement, the team attributed the infraction to issues encountered during the assembly process.

They explained that bolts used to attach the spoiler base to the deck lid caused the pre-drilled holes to wear due to supplied part interferences, suggesting that the modification was unintentional.

Implications for the Season

This incident marks a challenging start to Briscoe’s tenure with JGR, especially after a promising performance at Daytona.

The significant points deficit means that the team will need exceptional performances in the upcoming races to regain competitive standing.

Moreover, the suspension of Crew Chief James Small adds an additional layer of adversity, as his strategic expertise will be missed during this critical period.

This situation underscores the importance of strict adherence to NASCAR’s regulations. Teams are reminded that even minor modifications to standardized parts can lead to severe consequences, affecting not only standings and finances but also the integrity of the sport.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how Briscoe and the No. 19 team navigate these challenges and strive to restore their reputation on the track.
